Beta Sigma Omega History
Beta Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is the premier black Greek letter organization established in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. On December 19, 1937, *Helen Finley Anderson, Mid-Western Regional Director, organized Beta Sigma Omega Chapter with six charter members present:
*Betty Carruthers Bland
*Vida Lois Milton Van Brunt
*Jeannetta Gear
*Mary McCurtis Moulder
*Ruth B. Joseph
*Geraldine Armstrong Williams (* deceased)
Others in attendance at the installation banquet were: *Elaine Bethel *Vertna Jones Sneed *Alene Brown *Gladys Brown Thomas *Anna Bell Wesley Dillard *Lea V. Wiley
On December 9, 1939, Beta Sigma Omega Chapter held its first pledge service, and Natalie Davis and Marie Robinson were the first inductees. Through initiations and transfers, the chapter's membership has grown from six in 1937 to over 230 members in 2009, having the largest membership in the Mid-Western Region. Today, all sorors living in the State of Oklahoma can proudly display on their automobiles an authentic AKA Oklahoma license plate due to Beta Sigma Omega's working directly with the Oklahoma Legislature to approve this feat.
Beta Sigma Omega Chapter has enjoyed a succession of outstanding women who have dedicated themselves to providing quality leadership.
